Wylie, Wylie East battle for playoff seeding
By Travis L. Brown
WYLIE (2-4, 1-2 10-4A) AT WYLIE EAST (5-1, 2-1)
7:30 p.m. Friday at Wylie Stadium
When we saw them last: Wylie almost took down District 10-4A favorite Highland Park but lost 24-21. Wylie East continued its great run through district play by just about doubling up on Richardson Pearce, 40-21.
2010 result: Wylie ran away with the new city rivalry game last year, 57-7. Former Wylie quarterback Nico Ramirez peppered the ball all around the field to move the ball and pounded his way into the end zone for four rushing touchdowns.
What’s at stake: Playoff position. Wylie has had a surprisingly poor season so far and sits out of the playoffs three games into district play. Wylie East has had a surprising run for such a young program and sits comfortably in a playoff slot. A Wylie East win would further solidify its push for the playoffs and a Wylie win would leave hope alive that the Pirates could make the postseason.
Key matchup: Both teams’ offenses. Wylie has rolled through the season with a successful balanced attack and will be able to put points up on the board. Wylie will have to try and keep up in a game that they hope will become a shootout.
Players to watch: Wylie East has a quarterback and running back who have passed and rushed for over 1,000 yards in Garrett McCain and Jabari Anderson. Running back Victor Jones is Wylie’s top scoring threat with seven touchdowns on the season.
Prediction: Wylie East 21, Wylie 17.
