High School: Darius White

Dunbar product Darius White leaving UT

December, 13, 2011
Texas receiver and Fort Worth Dunbar product Darius White confirmed Tuesday that he has decided to transfer.

White, who has been given an unconditional release from his scholarship, cited the need for a fresh start, although he has not yet determined where he will transfer.

He will not travel with the Longhorns to their Dec. 28 Holiday Bowl matchup against California.

The sophomore receiver has seen action in 20 career games and has six receptions for 71 yards and one touchdown, with five of those receptions coming in 2011.

As a senior at Dunbar, White was named to the Parade All-America team, tabbed first-team All-USA by USA Today and an EA SPORTS All-American third-team selection. He played in the 2010 Under Armour All-America Game.

Dunbar waited patiently for White

When asked who the leaders of his team are this season, Fort Worth Dunbar head coach Robert Hughes, Jr., spouted off three names quickly.

It just so happens that those three names were the same person.

"Darius White, Darius White, Darius White," Hughes said, referring to the four-star football recruit at wide receiver who has verbally committed to Texas already (and isn't likely to see the basketball court in college).

Hughes and Dunbar had to wait until the end of football season -- and then there was a three-week waiting period in late December/early January around the Under Armor All-American game -- for White to join them, but they were happy when he returned.

Now, Dunbar (10-12, 7-4 in District 7-4A) looks poised to make a run at the playoffs after having won five in a row going into Friday's game against Fort Worth Eastern Hills (7:30 p.m. at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center). The Highlanders (17-7, 9-2) beat Dunbar 67-53 the first time these two teams played.
