Area teams rule state 7-on-7 pool play

COLLEGE STATION -- Teams from the Dallas/Fort Worth area teams dominated pool play on opening day of Division I competition for Class 5A and 4A schools in the FOX Sports Southwest 7-on-7 State Championship presented by adidas and Academy Sports & Outdoors Friday at Texas A&M.

Area pool winners were West Mesquite, Coppell, DeSoto, Wylie, Hebron, Arlington Lamar, Mesquite, Plano, Plano West, Rockwall and Arlington Bowie.

The 11 winners will be joined in Saturday’s championship bracket by pool runner-ups Irving Nimitz and Saginaw Boswell in single-elimination play, which begins at 9 a.m. Including the 5 p.m. championship game at Kyle Field, eventual finalists are faced with playing five games on Saturday.

Southlake Carroll, Odessa Permian and defending Division I 7-on-7 state champion Round Rock Stony Point are among the big-name schools that have to settle for this year's consolation bracket, which begins at 8 p.m. and concludes with a 4 p.m. final at Kyle Field.

In Division II (Class 3A, 2A 1A) finals on Friday, Brownwood edged Cameron, 34-32, for the state title.

Celina, Division II champion in two of the last three state 7-on-7 state competitions, lost to Brownwood, 39-27, in the semifinal round.

Lucas Lovejoy fell to Cameron in the other Division II semifinal, 28-25.
