Prior to Richardson Berkner boys basketball coach Rod Wright’s suspension by the UIL, Richardson ISD had reported Wright’s violations and suspended him indefinitely, RISD athletics director Bob Dubey said Thursday.

“We had self-reported some violations and we had taken our own initiative to suspend him prior to this point, until we found out what the UIL wanted to do,” Dubey said.

The UIL announced Wednesday that Wright was suspended until next school year. Wright has not coached the Rams for approximately the last 16 games while serving the district-sanctioned suspension, Dubey said.

Wright was found to be in violation of Section 1209 (f)(1) of the UIL Constitution and Contest Rules by having some of his players working at non-school summer camps.

Wright is still an employee of the school district and will continue in his teaching duties at Berkner, Dubey said.

Assistant coach Jason Petty has taken over Wright’s role as interim head coach and will remain at the helm of the Rams until the end of the season, Dubey said.

Wright will serve the suspension as well as a two-year probation for violations of Section 1209 (f)(1) and Section 51(a)(6)(10). He can't return to coaching until Aug. 22.

Dubey said the district and school is still unsure of what the coaching situation at Berkner will be next school year.

“None of that has even been addressed,” Dubey said. “We don’t even know if we need a new coach yet. We just got the ruling yesterday and we’ll have the opportunity to evaluate the situation, but right now he’s employed and still teaching and there’s no status change from the ruling yesterday.”

Berkner (18-5) is No. 7 in the latest ESPNDallas.com Class 5A area rankings and is in first place in District 9-5A with a 6-0 district record.
