DALLAS -- Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki is 16 points away from joining the NBA's exclusive 20,000-point club. In all likelihood he'll get there Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Lakers.

"It’s huge," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. "To give you an idea of how staggering I think it is, I think my total points for my career is 199. I don’t think I got to 200."

Carlisle played three seasons with the Celtics (1984-87), one with the Knicks (1987-88) and briefly with the Nets (1989-90). While it's true his career point total won't make any milestone clubs, Carlisle can feel good that he did indeed surpass 200 career points. In fact, he finished his career with 422 big ones (not to mention a championship ring with Boston).

Carlisle was thinking of his most productive NBA season in 1985-86 when he played in 77 games, averaged 9.9 minutes and 2.6 points. He finished the season one point shy of 200 (but with that ring).
