Can Mavs contain Monta Ellis?

SAN FRANCISCO -- The commissioner apparently didn't ask Rick Carlisle's opinion before snubbing Monta Ellis when the Western Conference needed an All-Star replacement.

"Pound for pound, he may be the best scorer we’ve seen in this league in a long time," Carlisle said of the Golden State Warriors' star.

The Mavs have good reason to have such respect for the 6-3, 180-pound Ellis. Ellis has torched them twice this season, going off for 37 in Golden State's November win and a career-high 46 in last week's loss.

It'd be a major accomplishment for the Mavs, who have been miserable defensively for more than a month, to hold Ellis to his average (26.2 ppg).

Ellis did his damage in Dallas in different ways. He attacked the basket over and over again in the Warriors' win, when he went 15-of-29 from the floor and had 12 buckets in the paint. In last week's loss, he put on a perimeter shooting clinic during a 17-of-23 performance (4-of-6 from 3-point range).

Carlisle gave Ellis credit for being in a remarkable rhythm, but the Mavs also didn't defend him well.

"You’ve got to have a great individual effort and you also have to have great team schemes," Carlisle said. "We have to have five guys ready to react to whatever he’s doing all the time."
