Mavs have missed big men

The Mavericks have managed to keep their winning streak alive with an emergency smallball lineup, but the last few games have been a reminder of how much the Dallas defense needs a legitimate big man.

The Mavs have allowed an average of 109.3 points on 49 percent shooting in three games since Brendan Haywood was sidelined by a sore back. They've basically defending like they did in January, when Erick Dampier's bad knee made him either inactive or ineffective.

The shaky defense didn't prevent the Mavs from beating the Sacramento Kings, Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves. But it would prevent the Mavs from making a playoff run.

However, this is a short-term issue. Haywood might be able to return Wednesday against the New Jersey Nets. Dampier (open dislocation of his right middle finger) also ought to be back soon.

The opponent's offensive numbers will drop drastically once the Mavs have a healthy big man or two. No need to rush the big men back, though. The Mavs ought to be able to survive with smallball against the Nets and New York Knicks this week.
