Haywood aims for double-double

Brendan Haywood said his goal next season as the starting center for the Dallas Mavericks is to do something he's never done in his previous nine NBA seasons.

"I want to average a double-double," Haywood said Thursday, shortly after agreeing in principle to a six-year, $55 million deal to remain with the Mavs.

Haywood, 30, has never averaged double-digit rebounds for a full season, and he finished just one season in double-figure scoring (10.6 in 2007-08). Last season, though, was Haywood's best stab it. In 49 games with Wahington, he averaged 9.8 points and 10.3 rebounds. His numbers dropped to 8.1 points and 7.4 rebounds in 28 games with the Mavs following the February deadline trade. Those numbers dipped further to 6.0 points and 6.2 rebounds in just 23.2 minutes in the six-game first-round playoff series loss to San Antonio.

Haywood points out that he was right at double-double territory during the club's 13-game winning streak when he was the full-time starter as Erick Dampier recovered from finger surgery. His production dipped as his minutes dipped with Dampier's return and ultimately Dampier's return to the starting lineup.

Haywood has been assured that he will enter training camp as the starting center, and he said with more time to learn coach Rick Carlisle's system, he can be a double-double threat on a nightly basis.

Asked his goals for the coming season, Haywood laid it out there: 12-10-2 -- as in 12 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots a game (and he added that he'd like to get closer to 2.7 or 3.0 blocks a game). Haywood has averaged at least 2.0 blocks only in the past two seasons. So, all of his stated numbers, if reached, would be career numbers and the Mavs would be thrilled.

"I need to be a guy you can give it to inside a little bit, but blocks and rebounds are the biggest thing," Haywood said. "If I can achieve those goals, I will help this team."
