Ian Mahinmi is well worth a minimum-risk roll of the dice for the Mavs.
The Frenchman is a project, not a candidate to play significant minutes next season behind Brendan Haywood. But he's an intriguing prospect as a 6-11, 230-pound 23-year-old who can run and jump.
It's a bonus that Mahinmi, who was limited to garbage time with the Spurs, is buddies with French national teammate Rodrigue Beaubois.
If Mahinmi develops, he could become a Birdman-like energy player. If he doesn't make progress, the Mavs just won't pick up the team option for the second year of his deal.
One issue with Mahinmi: He's played two years in the D-League already, so he can't be shipped to Frisco. That means he'll have to develop without getting many minutes.
