Carlisle's itinerary: Guadeloupe, Senegal
On Thursday, he heads off to the French-speaking island and home of Mavs guard Roddy Beaubois to lend a hand at his basketball camp. Guadeloupe is the southernmost of the Leeward Islands in the eastern Caribbean Sea.
On Aug. 3, Carlisle jets off to Africa to participate in the NBA's Basketball without Borders program that stops in Dakar, Senegal, for the first time. The NBA has not held a camp outside of Johannesburg, South Africa, since the first one in 2003. African-born NBA players will headline the three-day camp, including former Mavs center DeSagana Diop.
Former Mavs director of player personnel and vice president of international affairs Gallo Fall, a native of Senegal who now heads the NBA's first office in Africa, located in Johannesburg, recruited Carlisle to join the camp in what will be his first journey to the continent.
"Donnie [Nelson] and I want to support him [Fall] because he's been so good to us," Carlisle said. "There’s going to be a lot of players and coaches there. From everything I've heard it's a great experience and I'm looking forward to it."
