Could Carmelo Anthony be a match for the Mavs? The Dallas decision-makers believe so, according to ESPN.com’s Marc Stein.
Stein reports in the most recent edition of the Weekend Dime that the Mavs are among a handful of teams who would be willing to trade for Anthony without a contract extension on the table. The Mavs, who desperately need a superstar to pair with Dirk Nowitzki to have legitimate NBA title hopes, are apparently willing to bet that they could convince Melo to stick around if they can just get him to town.
That’s quite a risk. Is it worth giving up Rodrigue Beaubois?
There is no realistic way the deal gets done without Roddy B. departing Dallas, probably along with expiring contracts Caron Butler and DeShawn Stevenson and perhaps in a multi-team trade. In my opinion, that makes it a tough decision. It’s definitely not worth it if Melo is a half-season rental for the Mavs.
It essentially comes down to this: Are the chances of locking Anthony up to an extension better than Beaubois’ chances of developing into the co-star Nowitzki needs?
