Mavericks center and top defender Tyson Chandler won’t play tonight at Minnesota as Timberwolves forward Kevin Love seeks to tie Moses Malone’s record of 51 consecutive double-doubles.
Chandler will miss his third consecutive game with a sprained right ankle. He was hopeful he could return tonight, but the Mavs are playing it cautious during a stretch of five games in seven nights that ends with the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday night.
The Mavs are 1-1 without Chandler during this stint and 2-3 without him overall this season.
Chandler is averaging 10.4 points and 9.4 rebounds.
Dallas next plays at New Orleans on Wednesday night and return home to face the re-tooled New York Knicks with Carmelo Anthony on Thursday night.
Love, the first-time All-Star for the moribund Timberwolves is averaging 20.9 and 15.7 rebounds. A double-double tonight will tie him with Malone, who reached 51 in a row during the 1978-79 season.
Mavs backup center Brendan Haywood is expected to make his third consecutive start in Chandler’s absence.
