DALLAS -- The Knicks looked to be roadkill midway through the third quarter as the Mavericks led by 26. But, oh brother, after three quarters, aided by a 12-0 run, the Mavs' lead has nearly been cut in half, 99-85.
Do we have a game or just one of those runs that every NBA team will make no matter how defeated they appear? The Knicks do at least have a measure of motivation now to compete for 12 more minutes and the Mavs will need a strong effort early to get their key guys the rest that seemed so certain.
The Mavs have received tremendous effort up and down the roster, led by Shawn Marion and his tender ribs. He didn't look like a player after last night's full-speed crash into a television camera, but he's led the edgy effort with 16 points and seven rebounds. Roddy Beaubois has 14 points as does Jason Terry.
Dirk Nowitzki is having a quiet night with 12 points.
Carmelo Anthony hasn't even shown up for this one, going 4-of-14 from the floor for 16 points. He hit a late 3-pointer during the run. Amare Stoudemire is 10-of-21 after getting off to a 1-of-7 start for a game-high 30 points.
