Mavs end back-and-fourth first up by 2

DALLAS -- The Mavericks had a 12-4 run with Dirk Nowitzki firing with a hot hand for 11 points in the opening quarter, but the Lakers kept pounding inside with Andrew Bynum (1o points) and Lamar Odom (six points).

The quarter went back and forth with the Lakers scoring inside and the Mavs outside. Dallas finished it on top, 29-27

However, both teams are dealing with early foul issues. Kobe Bryant and Bynum both ended the quarter with two and with both out the Mavs went on a 9-0 run. Bryant, who has just two points, left with more than six minutes to go after giving Nowitzki an and-1 during a stretch in which he scored nine in a row.

For the Mavs, Tyson Chandler picked up a late first-quarter foul for his second and Brendan Haywood also has two. That's trouble against the Lakers' big front line -- assuming Bynum can keep himself out of further foul trouble.

While the Lakers scored 18 of their points in the paint, the Mavs got just two, a late jam by Chandler for an and-1.

Jason Kidd has five points for the Mavs, including one of the team's four 3s on five attempts. The Lakers missed their only attempt from deep and are now 2-of-21 in the last two games.
