Travis L. Brown/ESPNDallas.com Mavs fan Timothy Powers grew up in Germany, about 15 miles from Dirk Nowitzki's hometown of Wurzburg. Powers was at Love Field to greet the Mavs' plane Monday.
He was not going to miss the Mavericks’ return to Love Field on Monday with the Larry O’Brien Trophy after they beat Miami, 105-95, in Game 6 of the NBA Finals on Sunday.

“I’m a really big fan of Dirk,” said Powers, who moved to Dallas and just graduated from John Paul II High School in Plano. “It’s pretty crazy. He’s an icon for us.”

Powers, his sister, Alyssa, and friend Denise Ganzinger held two signs in German, honoring their hero that read in part: “Congratulations, Dirk, you have deserved it after 13 years to finally get your ring,” and, “Dirk, you rock.” They watched Sunday’s game on television and saw the video from Nowitzki’s hometown during the broadcast. Powers wore a T-shirt with a German flag.

They were among the thousands that greeted the team at Love Field. Nowitzki did a victory lap of sorts for the fans that lined the fence, holding his MVP trophy. Jason Terry carried the O’Brien Trophy as fans roared.

“I don’t know if the whole country of Germany is going crazy but I’m sure a lot of it is,” Powers said. “For some people it’s probably as crazy as if Germany won a World Cup.”
