Dirk Nowitzki and buddy Chris Kaman of the Los Angeles Clippers kept Germany's 2012 Olympic bid alive Friday with a do-or-die victory against Turkey. Nowitzki, mired in foul trouble the entire game, made four free throws down the stretch and finished with 19 points and Kaman had 20 in the 73-67 victory, Germany's first in four games in the second round of the European Championship in Lithuania.
The victory not only kept the Germans in contention to qualify for the Olympics, it gives Nowitzki a chance to become the all-time leading scorer in EuroBasket competition before this tournament is over. Nowitzki, now 23rd on the NBA's all-time scoring list, moved to second place after Wednesday's game and his 967 career points in 42 Eurobasket games and is just 37 points from catching Greek legend Nikos Galis.
Next up for Dirk and his young German squad is host country Lithuania on Sunday. That game tips at 1 p.m. CT.
