DALLAS -- Now that it appears Rudy Fernandez won't even make it to Dallas -- ESPN.com's Marc Stein is reporting that the Dallas Mavericks are working on a deal to send him to the Denver Nuggets) -- Delonte West was the lone Mavs player not at Tuesday's media day.

West and the Mavs reached agreement on a one-year deal Monday, and it's possible he will be in Dallas on Wednesday, when the Mavs could finally practice with their full complement of players. When West does arrive, coach Rick Carlisle has him penciled in to take over J.J. Barea's old job as Jason Kidd's backup, a critical job in this season's compacted schedule.

"I really like him as an all-around player. I believe he’s going to be our backup point guard," Carlisle said. "He’s a multi-dimensional player, and he has an edginess about him, a toughness about him that I think we need, particularly with the loss of [DeShawn] Stevenson. I look at him a little bit like Barea. He’s a point guard that you can plug into some two (shooting guard), and he’s a basketball player. I don’t necessarily think he’s a guy who plays this position or that position. He plays the game."

West, who shares Stevenson's edginess, as well as a love for full-body ink, has career averages of 9.7 points, 3.6 assists and 3.0 rebounds. Because of injuries, he played just 24 games last season with the Boston Celtics and hasn't played more than 64 games since 2006-07.
