Why Dirk and J-Kidd sat it out

DALLAS -- After a few huff-and-puff practices last week, Dirk Nowitzki said that Jason Kidd joked to him that the front office was thinking about using the amnesty provision on the 7-foot NBA Finals MVP.

Admittedly, Nowitzki was hurting getting through coach Rick Carlisle's extended practices in this shortened training camp.

When Sunday night's first of two preseason games rolled around, it did come as a bit of a surprise, considering the number of new players on the team, that Nowitzki and Kidd were held out of the 106-92 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

"This is part of just getting ready for the 25th and each guy kind of has a different metabolism when it comes to getting in shape," Carlisle said. "In communicating with them we felt, and they felt, it would be best for them to get other work in today and pass on tonight. We're going to monitor this day-to-day and keep going."

Carlisle saved heavier minutes for his newcomers who need the reps to learn the system more or less on the fly.

So, coach, surely Nowitzki and Kidd will play Tuesday night at OKC?

"We'll see," Carlisle said. "I can't give you a definite answer on that."
