The 38-year-old Kidd will not be available for Saturday night’s home game against the New Orleans Hornets.

“As of right now, he’s going to be out tomorrow and we’ll go from there,” coach Rick Carlisle said Friday afternoon on ESPN 103.3’s Galloway and Company. “So we’re going to have to make some significant adjustments with what we’re doing. You don’t have that guy, who has been a safety blanket for all of us here for however many years, our game is going to have to change somewhat and we’re going to have to be very tied together.”

Kidd, an 18-year veteran who has played at least 80 games in each of the last six seasons, suffered the injury near the end of the first quarter in Thursday’s lopsided loss. He immediately went to the locker room, trailed by head athletic trainer Casey Smith, and did not return.

Kidd, who was not available for comment after the game, has averaged 4.9 points, 4.5 assists and 3.8 rebounds during the defending NBA champions’ 3-5 start.

After the departure of J.J. Barea in free agency, Kidd is the only pure point guard on the Mavs' roster. Delonte West, Jason Terry and Rodrigue Beaubois -- all of whom get the majority of their minutes at shooting guard -- will split the point guard duties in Kidd's absence. Lamar Odom is also used to initiate the offense in a point forward role.
