Mavs don't plan on adding a guard
The Mavs, who have a full roster of 15 players, don’t intend to seek veteran help at the position. They would have to release a player -- most likely D-League-assigned center/power forward Sean Williams, whose minimum-salaried contract recently became fully guaranteed -- if they signed a free-agent guard.
The Mavs will depend on their young prospects instead of signing an experienced guard such as Antonio Daniels, the 13-year NBA veteran who had 14 points and 11 assists for Donnie Nelson’s Texas Legends on Wednesday night, to a 10-day contract.
The Mavs were encouraged by Dominique Jones’ six-assist, one-turnover performance in Wednesday’s win over the Nuggets. They expect Rodrigue Beaubois, who has been up and down as a point guard this season, to return to the team relatively soon after grieving the unexpected death of his father.
Lamar Odom will also be used more often as a point forward, a role that is also a possibility for Vince Carter and Shawn Marion.
“We’ll just have to make it work,” Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said Wednesday. “With [Jason] Kidd, we’re going to have to keep his minutes reasonable. Dominique Jones is going to have to play some. Vince is going to have to get more minutes at the 2 position. We had Odom handling the ball a lot tonight. Look, we may have to be creative with our rotation.”
