Mark Cuban not looking to trade, but will listen
However, Cuban and Mavs president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson will still take calls.
Cuban always says the Mavs will be "opportunistic" in the trade market. But unlike a couple of years ago, when he acknowledged that the Mavs wanted to make a major move weeks before shipping Josh Howard to Washington in a blockbuster deal, the Mavs' front office isn't planning to be aggressive over the next few weeks.
“We’re not looking to change unless someone makes us an offer we can’t refuse,” Cuban said. “We’re not looking to shake anything up. We think we’ve got a good team that hasn’t played its best basketball yet.”
(Cuban’s dismissive take on the rumor that Rodrigue Beaubois is available: “That’s what people in New Orleans say because they’ve always liked him.”)
The Mavs are set up to have significant space under the salary cap this summer for the first time since Cuban bought the franchise and helped build the Mavs into a perennial playoff team. It would take a major upgrade to get Cuban to reverse course financially, in part because of the Mavs’ potential to be major players in free agency and in part because he considers it important to “get in line with the new CBA,” which has increasingly harsh luxury-tax penalties.
But the bottom line still isn’t Cuban’s biggest concern.
“Priority No. 1 is to win a championship,” Cuban said, whose competitive fire burns as hot as ever after last summer’s championship parade. “If there’s something that takes up cap room that puts us over the top, I’m in.”
