DALLAS – There’s a little more than a week left before the trade deadline and the Mavericks aren’t in the middle of the rumor mill.
“Our phone hasn’t been ringing at all about anybody and we’re not calling anybody,” owner Mark Cuban said. “I told Donnie to take calls, but we’re not making calls. There you have it.”
This isn’t normal around these parts. But it is expected.
The Mavs are trying to contend for a championship while maintaining the financial flexibility to create major space under the salary cap this summer. They aren’t going to make a deal before the deadline that reduces their odds to repeat. And it would have to be a humongous upgrade for the Mavs to pull a trigger on a trade that sacrifices salary cap space.
Forget about a deal before the deadline that would dump Shawn Marion’s contract, as ESPN.com's Marc Stein covered in the Weekend Dime. He’s too valuable to this team to let go in midseason.
If you want to be delusional, keep dreaming about getting something of value for Lamar Odom, an underachieving distraction with a $2.4 million buyout for next season.
Of course, Cuban has been known to tell a few fibs as the trade deadline nears. In this case, however, it'd be hard to believe any blockbuster rumors that involve the Mavs.
