3-pointer: Dominique Jones makes most of rare minutes
Jones was a surprise contributor in the Mavs’ win over the Cavaliers, having basically been banished to the end of the bench since Rodrigue Beaubois recovered from his most recent ankle sprain. Given the backup point guard minutes Saturday night, Jones seized the opportunity with 10 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals in 18 minutes.
“My owner gets an assist on that one,” coach Rick Carlisle said. “He talked to me last night after the game and said he thought Dominique could bring something tonight. He’s had good games in here before and he gave us a big lift. Mark (Cuban) gets a big assist on that one.”
Beaubois was the only active Maverick who didn’t get any minutes against the Cavs. He was terrific in the season opener, but Beaubois has struggled since then, shooting just 31.4 percent from the floor so far this season.
A few more notes from the Mavs’ win:
1. Return of the real Matrix: This is more like it from Shawn Marion.
Marion struggled Friday night in his return from a five-game absence due to a sprained MCL in his left knee. His performance Saturday was much more characteristic of the man the Mavs consider their best all-around player.
Marion recorded his first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds and also dished out four assists. The Mavs outscored the Cavs by 10 with Marion on the floor, which matched Dahntay Jones for the best plus-minus on the team.
And Marion displayed a little bit of the leadership that the Mavs are counting on from the 14-year vet, who is the only healthy title-run contributor remaining on the roster.
"We're going to start calling people out and challenging them,” Marion said. “We're going to make guys accountable on this team. If they buckle, they'll buckle. But if they don't buckle, you'll see what happens."
2. Kaman’s block party: Big man Chris Kaman blocked six shots, the eighth time in his career he’s rejected that many shots in a game. It was the first time Kaman has had that many blocks since April 6, 2011. His career high is nine blocks.
3. O.J.’s O: O.J. Mayo continued his remarkable run of shooting efficiency, scoring 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range. It’s the first time this season in Mayo’s career that he has scored at least 19 while having more than twice as many points as field goals attempted.
