How it happened: An outbreak of turnovers in the fourth quarter proved fatal for the Mavericks.

The Mavs committed turnovers on six consecutive possessions to fuel Philadelphia’s 12-0 go-ahead run. The 76ers led the remainder of the game, which featured 12 ties and eight lead changes.

The stretch of futility put a spotlight on the Mavs’ point guard problems. Darren Collison and Dominique Jones combined for half of the turnovers during the tailspin.

Collison, who has been erratic offensively and a liability defensively, came off the bench for the first time this season. He put up solid numbers off the pine (12 points, six assists, five steals), sparking a 16-2 run when he entered the game in the first quarter, but he also committed four turnovers.

Jones, who was glued to the bench early in the season, struggled in the second start of his career. He had two points on 0-of-5 shooting, three assists and four turnovers.

The Mavs still had a chance to send the game into overtime after a clutch scoring spree by Vince Carter, but O.J. Mayo missed a pair of free throws with seconds remaining, the second one intentionally. Jae Crowder missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The Mavs had six players in double figures, including a team-high 20 points by center Chris Kaman, a season-high 17 points by power forward Elton Brand and a season-high 17 points by forward Shawn Marion.

Philadelphia's Evan Turner led all scorers with 22 points. The Sixers also got 20 points from Thaddeus Young and 18 from Jrue Holiday.

What it means: The 7-8 Mavs dipped below .500 for the first time this season. They’re 2-5 on the road, where they’ll play 15 of their next 22 games. Dallas has lost seven of 10 games since its surprising 4-1 start.

Play of the game: Holiday stole a sloppy pass and turned the Mavs’ fifth straight turnover into a transition opportunity. Holiday delivered a no-look pass to Young for an and-1 layup that stretched the Sixers’ lead to nine with 5:55 remaining.

Stat of the night: The Mavs were 19-of-20 from the line before Mayo's two misses.
