DALLAS – Chris Kaman can be kind of a grumpy guy, and sitting out a week due to a concussion hasn’t helped his mood.

Kaman still hasn’t been cleared to practice. He won’t be until he passes the NBA-mandated test for players who sustain concussions.

“I got to take it tomorrow,” Kaman said after doing some light shooting Tuesday. “It’s the stupidest test ever.

“For so many years in the NBA, they never had to do that stuff and now they come up with all that concussion protocol crap. It’s not cool, but it is cool, I guess. It keeps people safe. I just try to do the right things and wait until I can pass the test.”

The 7-foot Kaman was going through a tough time even before he banged his head on the floor during the Mavs’ Jan. 28 practice. He had lost his starting job, playing only 12 and 11 minutes in the Mavs’ previous two games.

Kaman’s role the rest of the season is uncertain. That will be a subject of discussion when he’s cleared to play, and he doesn’t know when that will be.

“Hopefully it’ll progress farther and farther forward, take that test, pass it and play sooner than later,” Kaman said. “I’m tired of sitting around. It sucks. You can’t do much.”
