Bernard James returned to Dallas Tuesday afternoon due to personal reasons, according to team officials. He was officially ruled out of the Mavericks' summer league team's preliminary round finale.
James did not play in Sunday's loss to Charlotte, with the team citing an illness as the reason for his absence.
With the team hoping the second-year center would be a dominating presence in the middle, it’s a bad break that James will end up missing a few opportunities to further develop his game in a competitive environment.
The single-elimination tournament starts on Wednesday. The winner of the tournament will be crowned the first-ever NBA Las Vegas Summer League champion. The finals will be on July 21.
All teams will be seeded 1-22 and the bracket will be set for the tournament.
Teams seeded 1-10 will have a first-round bye, and teams seeded 11-22 will open the tournament on Wednesday. Dallas’ seeding is still up in the air as they head into Tuesday night’s game.
James’ status is up in the air for when the team begins tournament play.
