Jackie Carmichael's seven blocks a summer league high
Jackie Carmichael recorded a 2013 summer league single-game high seven blocks in the team’s 79-76 loss. Chicago’s Matthew Bryan-Amaning and Miami’s Jarvis Varnado shared the previous high with five blocks. Varnado recorded his blocks in the Orlando Summer League.
Carmichael’s seventh block in the Las Vegas Summer League led to a scrambling possession finishing with Golden State’s Cameron Jones dunking the ball to give the Warriors a 77-76 lead with just 10.2 seconds left in the game.
The seven blocks by Carmichael ties the all-time high in summer league play, dating back to its inception in 2004. Golden State’s Kent Bazemore also recorded seven blocks on July 20, 2012.
Carmichael was looking for a block opportunity during the fourth quarter against Bazemore on Thursday. Bazemore drove through the lane and Carmichael met him at the rim. Golden State’s swingman threw down a vicious dunk with 3:20 left in the game, cutting Dallas’ lead to 74-64 and stealing momentum. It was the start of a 17-2 run for the Warriors that sank the Mavs.
The 6-foot-9 forward Carmichael ranks first all-time in blocks at Illinois State with 200.
Carmichael has come on strong for the Mavs over the last couple of games, thanks to his effort and energy. With Bernard James back in Dallas due to personal reasons, Carmichael has done a solid job of stepping up as the most consistent big man for the Mavs summer league team.
He’ll have one more chance to impress Dallas’ coaching staff and try to earn an invite to the team’s training camp as they take on the second-seeded Chicago Bulls in a consolation game at 9:30 p.m. CST on Friday night.
It will be the summer league finale for both teams.
