Wright: No surgery necessary 'a huge relief'

DALLAS -- As far as Brandan Wright was concerned, the diagnosis of a small, nondisplaced fracture in his left shoulder was good news.

Yes, his status for the start of the regular season is in doubt. He'll likely have to miss some games, but this isn't nearly as serious as the shoulder injuries that plagued Wright early in his NBA career.

This injury didn't affect the surgical repairs made in Wright's shoulder in 2009, when his recovery caused him to miss an entire season.

"That was a huge relief," said Wright, who was injured in Tuesday's practice and underwent an MRI on Thursday. "That was my concern, that I jacked up the previous injury, but I didn't. Even better, there's no soft tissue damage, so I'll be good to go whenever the bone is healed up."

The Mavs aren't certain when that will be. Wright will be evaluated on a weekly basis. He's wearing a sling on his left arm except when he's working out, which consists of some cardio and weight work.

"I'll get back," Wright said. "I'm not concerned about being ready when I do start playing.

"The biggest thing is always conditioning. We'll monitor that the best we can. I'm doing stuff right now to make sure I don't drop off too much. I think I'll be good to go when I do start playing."

It's disappointing for Wright's development to take a detour, especially since he's coming off such a strong finish last season; he also performed well in the preseason opener. This, however, is far from a worst-case scenario, concerning both the severity and timing of the injury.

"If it's going to happen, this isn't the worst time," coach Rick Carlisle said. "He's got a little time to heal. It's going to be evaluated weekly. It could have been a lot worse."
