Calderon (hamstring) plans to play Saturday
Calderon has been sidelined since the second day of training camp by a strained left hamstring. He intends to fully participate in Tuesday’s practice but will not play in Wednesday night’s preseason game against the Indiana Pacers.
“If I just start practicing tomorrow, it doesn’t make any sense just to go right away into full speed,” Calderon said before Monday night’s game against the Orlando Magic. “But feeling great. It’s not like I’ve got to get into shape or something, because I’ve been playing.”
Calderon, who signed a four-year, $29 million deal to take the reins as the Mavs’ starting point guard, played for Spain in international competition this offseason. The plan is for him to play in four preseason games, which he thinks will be plenty of time to get prepared for the Oct. 30 regular-season opener.
“No problem at all,” said Calderon, who expects to play Saturday night against the Charlotte Bobcats. “When you are with guys who know how to play basketball, everything is easier. It’s not only going to be the four games. We’ve got a lot of practices before the 30th. It’s going to be enough, for sure, to be ready and to get everybody on the same page.”
Marion sits: Mavs forward Shawn Marion did not play Monday night. It was a planned rest day for the 35-year-old Marion. Coach Rick Carlisle said he intends to rest other veterans throughout the remainder of the preseason schedule.
