DALLAS -- Mavericks center/forward Brandan Wright believes he will begin practicing at some point next week and will be ready to play in games soon after that.

Wright is recovering from a nondisplaced fracture in his left shoulder suffered in mid-October. He has been shooting, running, lifting weights and doing agility drills.

“The next step is to be able to take contact,” Wright said. “The next step after that is to be able to play in a game.”

Samuel Dalembert and DeJuan Blair have formed a solid center tandem during Wright’s absence. However, the 6-foot-10 Wright will provide the Mavs a different dimension with his athleticism and scoring ability.

Wright earned a two-year, $10 million contract with his performance at the end of last season, when he averaged 11.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.7 blocks in 24 minutes per game to help the Mavs go 15-8 down the stretch and finish .500. He hopes to pick up where he left off after a couple of practices.

“It wouldn’t be a week’s thing,” Wright said of being ready to play in games once he’s cleared to practice. “Couple of days and I’ll be ready to go. I think I can get on the court next week. I’m not saying the beginning or the end, but sometime next week.”
