To the surprise of nobody who has been paying attention, Dirk Nowitzki gave the Dallas Mavericks the Tim Duncan discount.

The exact details of the deal reported by ESPN.com’s Marc Stein aren’t known yet, but it’s a three-year contract in the $30 million range with a player option for the final season. Duncan’s deal with the San Antonio Spurs that expires after next season is for $30 million over three years, with a player option that he exercised for next season.

If Nowitzki’s deal starts with a $10 million salary, the Mavs have approximately $16.4 million in space under the salary cap, which is projected at $63.2 million. They also have the cap room exception (about $2.7 million per year for no more than two seasons) at their disposal and can exceed the cap to sign players to minimum contracts. The Nowitzki deal could start with a salary as low as $9.3 million and average $10 million over three years with 7.5 percent annual raises. In that case, the Mavs would have approximately $17.1 million in cap space.

A quick look at the Mavs’ cap picture:

Tyson Chandler: $15,096,888
Dirk Nowitzki: $10,000,000 (estimated)
Monta Ellis: $8,360,000
Brandan Wright: $5,000,000
Raymond Felton: $3,793,693
Jae Crowder: $915,243
Ricky Ledo: $816,482
Gal Mekel: $816,482
Minimum cap holds (4 at $490,180 each): $1,960,720
Cap commitments (including minimum holds): $46.76 million
