The Mavericks waived center Jake Voskuhl on Thursday to trim the roster to 15, the maximum allowed during the regular season.
The Mavs would have preferred to keep Voskuhl, who signed a nonguaranteed contract on the eve of training camp, instead of banished forward Shawne Williams. However, Williams is guaranteed a $2.4 million salary this season. Attempts to trade Williams or reach a buyout agreement have been unsuccessful.
The Mavs have no intention to welcome back Williams. But his expiring contract could be a valuable chip before the February trading deadline.
