Memphis trip is reminder of invisible 15th man
By Tim MacMahon
The Dallas Mavericks are in Memphis, which happens to be the hometown of the 15th man on their roster.
However, Shawne Williams will be nowhere in sight Friday night at FedExForum, unless he uses some of his $2.4 million salary to buy a ticket. The Mavs are more likely to bring back Lorenzo Williams (you’re a true MFFL if you remember him) than Shawne Williams.
The Mavs banished Shawne Williams in the middle of last season, months after acquiring the troubled but talented forward in a trade from the Indiana Pacers. The Mavs brass was fooled into believing that a change of scenery would allow Williams’ career to get untracked. It didn’t take long to realize they were wrong -- the smoke signals coming from his room on road trips were a strong hint -- but they had already picked up his contract option for this season by that time.
There is still a chance that the Mavs can make the trade for Williams pay off. His expiring contract could come in handy in a trade, which is the only reason the Mavs kept him on the roster.
