Carlisle thrilled with start of free agency

By Tim MacMahon

So far, so good in free agency for the Mavs, according to coach Rick Carlisle.

The Mavs were determined to keep Dirk Nowitzki and Brendan Haywood in Dallas. Those deals are done a week after the market opened.

"Dirk and Brendan were our two biggest priorities, so we are thrilled to get through phase one of free agency," Carlisle said via text message. "We look forward to having Brendan back and working with him again."

Phase one is done. What might phase two bring? The Mavs, who are aggressively exploring the trade market, are only armed with the midlevel exception, biannual exception and minimum contracts.

We'll try to get Carlisle to cough up some clues at 5:15 p.m., when he's scheduled to join us on ESPN 103.3's Galloway & Company.
