Latest on Rashad McCants ... and Greg Ostertag

By Marc Stein

*The Mavericks' D-League affiliate in nearby Frisco has begun two-a-day practices, but Rashad McCants is not the only absentee of stature.

The Texas Legends and coach Nancy Lieberman have expected for some time that 11-year NBA veteran Greg Ostertag would attempt a comeback by playing for the Legends or possibly join them as an assistant coach. Tag has been out of the NBA since the end of 2005-06 season.

But the 37-year-old from Duncanville has decided to shelve plans to resume his career for family reasons.

The difference here, of course, is that Ostertag has been in constant communication with the Legends about his intentions. McCants' next step remains a mystery.

Legends officials, though, continue to keep the door open for the enigmatic shooting guard, knowing that McCants has to play for them if he plays in the D-League this season and still convinced he'll ultimately report to Frisco if he continues to be shunned by NBA teams.

(Our man Rob Mahoney has more on McCants, from Lieberman's perspective, here at his excellent blog, The Two Man Game.)
