Dirk Nowitzki on shot: 'As good as you can get it'

By Calvin Watkins

This shot didn't go down for Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki.

Nowitzki, who scored a game-high 34 points in Dallas' 88-86 loss to the Miami Heat in Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Sunday night, has been clutch all postseason. So it was no surprise that it was Dirk trying to hit a big shot to tie the game in the final seconds.

Nowitzki scored a game-winning layup over Chris Bosh in Game 2. In Game 3, with Udonis Haslem defending, Nowitzki's shot from the foul line hit the back of the rim.

"I think it was as good as you can get it," Nowitzki said of the final shot.

Added Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra: "That was a very similar situation to what we saw the other night. Had a different matchup. That's a makeable shot, even for him. But UD did a great job of keeping his chest in front of him and forcing him into a fadeaway."

In Game 3, Nowitzki didn't get any help offensively. Shawn Marion -- while playing strong defense on LeBron James -- had just 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting. Jason Terry struggled with 15 points, but on 13 shots. J.J. Barea went 2-for-8 from the field, and Peja Stojakovic again added nothing -- hitting just one of two shots in only six minutes of action.

"Well, he knows that he's going to have to carry a certain load," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "Not just a scoring load, but he's going to have to make plays. He's going to have to facilitate. He's going to have to get guys involved."
