Jason Kidd eager to hand keys to Deron Williams?

By Jeff Caplan

DALLAS -- Jason Kidd shares agent Jeff Schwartz with New Jersey Nets point guard Deron Williams, and if Kidd has any say in it the two might share the same locker room next season.

As he did in Los Angeles earlier this season when the Nets swept through town concurrently, Kidd smiled at the notion of backing up Williams, a free-agent-to-be, in Dallas next season.

"Deron is one of the best point guards in this league,'' Kidd said. "He puts a lot of pressure on you offensively and plays both ends. I'm a big fan of Deron's and if he was to come back here that would be great.

"I'm all for it."

Of course, Kidd, who will also be a free agent this summer didn't rule out a return to the Nets in a backup role behind Williams if, say, one Dwight Howard, also a free-agent-to-be this summer if not traded first, also found his way to the franchise's new home in Brooklyn.

"Brooklyn has its appeal,'' Kidd said. "Last summer was a little damper because of the lockout, but this summer with the free agents that are out there should be entertaining for everybody to see who ends up where.''

One thing is for sure, Kidd, who turns 39 in March and said he'd still like to play 20 seasons (two more) which would take him to age 41, is ready to give up the key to his starting job after 18 seasons.

"Oh yes, yes," Kidd said. "If he wants them right now I can give them to him."

Williams might like to make that exchange now as his 10-25 Nets visit the American Airlines Center tonight. But, the earliest that can happen is July.

"So he gets to explore free agency. It's a lot of fun. He wants to win, so we'll see what happens," Kidd said. "We have the same agent, so we've played a little golf. Wherever he ends up, I'm going to try to end up. Package deal.''
