Mavs in mix for Derek Fisher?

By Tim MacMahon

(UPDATE: Rick Carlisle announced after the loss to the Bulls that Derek Fisher will sign with the Mavs on Thursday.)

The Mavericks had point guard problems before Darren Collison sprained his right middle finger, an injury that sidelined him for Wednesday’s game in Chicago.

Could veteran Derek Fisher be part of the solution?

Sources told ESPN.com’s Brian Windhorst that the 38-year-old Fisher is expected to sign with a team in the next several days, and that he’s choosing between two or three teams.

It’s not clear whether the Mavs are in the mix for Fisher, but the Mavs have been exploring tweaks to their roster and could certainly use a point guard with closing experience.

Mavs coach Rick Carlisle has expressed his appreciation for Fisher’s steady hand and savvy in the past.

“Experienced, championship-caliber player,” Carlisle said when Fisher signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder last season. “I certainly don’t see any down side to it.”

Carlisle credited Fisher, who won five championships with the Los Angeles Lakers, for expediting the young Thunder’s maturation process after Oklahoma City swept the Mavs in the first round of last season’s playoffs.
