Sources: Mavs interested in D.J. Augustin

By Tim MacMahon

Sources said the Mavericks have expressed interest in point guard D.J. Augustin, who could potentially diminish the backcourt shooting void left by the departure of Jose Calderon in the six-player deal with the New York Knicks.

The Mavs remain optimistic about re-signing Devin Harris, but that wouldn’t necessarily preclude them from adding Augustin, depending on the price.

Augustin, a Texas-ex who was the ninth overall pick in the 2008 draft, revived his career after signing with the Chicago Bulls in December last season. He averaged 14.9 points and 5.0 assists in 61 games for the Bulls, displaying the ability to make plays as a pick-and-roll ball handler and knock down 3-point shots (41.1 percent).

Calderon is one of the NBA’s most accurate 3-point shooters, a critical element to the Mavs’ offensive spacing last season. One of the most significant concerns about a Raymond Felton-Harris pairing at point guard is that they are both below-average 3-point shooters.

Felton and Harris have also both had durability issues, so it makes sense for the Mavs to pursue depth at point guard, particularly with a player with a sweet perimeter shooting touch.
