ESPN.com's Terry Blount wins award

By Richard Durrett

FORT WORTH, Texas -- ESPN.com motorsports columnist Terry Blount was honored Thursday night with the Excellence in Motorsports Journalism award. It was presented as part of the Texas Motorsports Hall of Fame banquet.

K. Lee Davis, motorsports editor at ESPN.com, introduced Blount, noting that when ESPN.com decided to go "all in" on NASCAR coverage online, the first guy he wanted to hire was Blount. And he did.

Blount, who was at the banquet with his daughter Haley, son Luke and wife Tammy, thanked the columnists and broadcasters that he's worked with for three decades.

"My mother wanted me to be a dentist," Blount said in his acceptance speech. "She asked me why I wanted to be a sportswriter and I told her that I just loved sports. And I love covering motorsports."

That hasn't changed for Blount, who has missed only one race since Texas Motor Speedway opened in 1997. He covered races for the Houston Post, Houston Chronicle and The Dallas Morning News before joining ESPN.com.
