FC Dallas suffered a catastrophic defensive meltdown at Tauro FC in Champions League Play last night. FCD traveled down to Panama city with a make shift lineup missing four starters and paid the price as Tauro ran roughshod over the Red Stripes 5-3 in CONCACAF Champions League Group C match at Estadio Rommel Fernandez.
FC Dallas, missing the recovery pace and defensive experience of Ugo Ihemelu, was exposed by the athletic Tauro offense. The wisdom and defensive grit of captain Daniel Hernandez was also missing from the deep lying midfield role and the combination of missing piece proved to be a deadly one. Tuaro used pace to rip through the heart of the FCD defense on multiple occasions and it only got worse after Jair Benitez was sent off with a straight red card for dissent. A straight red for dissent is quite unusual and comes from contact, spitting, threatening, or some really vile comment.
Things got even more out of hand with a straight red to Fabian Castillo in the 90th minute for a tackle from behind, although a red card was issued shortly after that to tauro's Carlos Rodriguez for a tackle in the penalty area.
One bright spot for FC Dallas was the play of Ruben Luna. Luna drew two PKs on the night, both of which were converted, the first by Marvin Chavez, the second by Luna himself in the dying moments of the game. Luna also scored a cracker of a goal in the 84th minute, beating a defender and ripping a shot into the corner netting.
Tauro remains alive, albeit barely, with five points, two behind FC Dallas and Toronto FC. Pumas UNAM leads the group with eight points. Group C will come down to the final round as Major League Soccer foes FC Dallas and Toronto FC meet at Pizza Hut Park on October 18, and Pumas hosts Tauro at Estadio Olimpico Universitario a night later. For FC Dallas it's simple, tie or win and they advance to the knockout round.
