FC Dallas selected North Carolina defender Matt Hedges with the 11th pick of Thursday's MLS SuperDraft.
Hedges, 21, won a national title with the Tar Heels in December. He compiled 85 starts between UNC and Butler, scoring 18 goals and notching seven assists.
"We were kind of surprised he was still available at No. 11," FC Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman said. "He's strong. He's got great size at 6-4 and he has really good feet, good movement, quickness and ball distribution. He's also got a little bit of a bite to him that you want in your defenders.
"He's going to be a really good fit for us to help bring more balance and support to the center back position."
Hedges said he can be a good fit with FC Dallas, who may be looking for a defender with George John exploring his options abroad.
"I think I bring a lot of the same qualities that George John has down in Dallas," Hedges said.
