Earlier this week, a rumor out of Panama surfaced saying that Carlos Rodriguez, a defender from Tauro FC, whom FC Dallas faced in the 2011 CONCACAF Champions League was all but ready to join FCD.
Well, Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman confirmed that the 21-year-old Rodriguez would be joining the club likely after the U.S./Panama match.
“Did we make an announcement today? I thought we were making an announcement. I guess we’re getting ready to make an announcement,” Hyndman said Thursday. “This player is more of a defender, a left back.”
But when asked when exactly we should expect Rodriguez to arrive and have his first practice with FCD, as is the case with most international players, he didn’t know mainly because of the paperwork involved.
“I don’t know. Hopefully the announcement comes out tonight or tomorrow morning. He’s with Panama. They’re playing against the U.S., so I would imagine once he gets his appointment, his P-1, his visa we hope he will come in with Blas Perez, which will be after the US game,” Hyndman said.
After the first time Dallas faced Tauro last fall, the FCD gaffer remembers asking his coaches who one of the opposing defenders was and all agreed he was definitely someone to keep an eye on.
“We played Tauro, so we’ve seen him twice. After the first game we said I don’t know who that guy was back there but he was a good defender, a good passer of the ball, good engine and then could attack. So we’ve had him on our radar for a while,” Hyndman said. “We know he’s playing at a high level.”
However, Rodriguez probably won’t be the final roster addition made during preseason as according to the ex-SMU coach, there is more to come.
“We’ve got a couple more guys coming in that we’re looking at right back, right side midfield combination. Then, I think we need to kind of finish with another attacking player whether it’s a second striker or a striker,” Hyndman said.
