Copa ESPN notes: Tigres moves closer to title

4/21/2012

Two second-half goals broke a scoreless tie between Dallas Tigres Academy 98B Gold and Kicks 98B in the Bracket B pool of the U14 division of Copa ESPN on Friday, sending Tigres to the semifinals Saturday with a 2-0 win.

Tigres’ Martin Gonzalez dribbled through three Kicks defenders in the box and ripped a shot past the keeper to net the first goal of the game.

Gilmar Juarez added insurance late in the match with a goal off a rebound after a strong Tigres offensive rush.

Tigres controlled possession for the majority of the match and had the best opportunity of the first half when Ivan Pena ripped a shot from distance, sending it just over the crossbar.

Tigres will face Guameru SC at 6 p.m. Saturday in one of the U14 semifinals.

Two FC Dallas squads battle for U14 championship berth

Both FC Dallas squads participating in the U14 division of Copa ESPN will face off in the other U14 semifinal at 6 p.m. Saturday.

FC Dallas Youth 99B Central ran away with their bracket, tallying seven points on two wins and a draw. They also controlled the first tiebreaker of goal differential with a plus-5.

FC Dallas 98 Premier had no problem with their pool, winning all three of their games decisively for nine points and a plus-11 goal differential.

The winner will advance to the U14 championship at 8:30 p.m. for the chance to defend their program’s U14 title from last year’s Copa ESPN.

FC Dallas U12 squad in semis after crazy comeback

FC Dallas Youth 00B sat tied with Texas Toros S.C. 00 heading into their final match of pool play Friday and had what seemed like an insurmountable seven-goal deficit in goal differential to break the tie.

However, FCD shocked the Toros by beating Inter, 8-0, on Friday to claim the necessary goals to pass the Toros and claim the semifinal berth.

FCD takes on Wizards FC 00 at 4 p.m. Saturday in the U12 semifinal.
