Major League Soccer has announced that with the arrival of two new teams in the 2011 season, the league will switch to a 34-game schedule. The regular season will start March 19 and run 32 weeks till October 22. There will be no breaks for international play.
While MLS doesn't explicitly say this, a 34-game schedule with 18 teams means each MLS team will play every other team twice, presumably by using a home-and-away format.
Now if only they would go single table.
Perhaps more important is the upcoming question of conferences. With Portland and Vancouver both joining the Western Conference, will Dallas or Houston move to the Eastern Conference to keep a balanced set of nine in each? Will MLS do away with conferences? Or might there be some other setup we can't predict?
