Are things starting to click for Bryan Leyva?
By Todd Date
Everyone who has watched him play sees the immense potential. But there are also the times when watching FC Dallas midfielder Bryan Leyva that you remember that he’s only 19.
Of course, Leyva was the first FCD Academy player to sign a professional contract, something he did back in Sept. 2009. Since then, he has made one appearance with the Dallas first team.
And before 2011, when the MLS Reserve Division returned, the opportunities for him to play were limited to preseason and in-season scrimmages. However, now that the reserve games are back, youngsters like Leyva are getting more chances to play and against solid competition and as a result, they are starting to benefit from facing better players.
“It’s very beneficial. Looking at last year, I didn’t have that many games and it’s important to have games. This year with the reserve league, it’s awesome,” Leyva said. “It helps us improve a lot and keeps us game fit. I’m very happy for this opportunity and am trying to take advantage of it.”
During preseason, one of the knocks on the 19-year-old talent was that he was having his fair share of issues as far as getting his fitness levels to where they needed to be. Well, it now looks like those problems could be a thing of the past.
“I feel great now. Before, I was a little out of game shape as you call it but I feel great and I’m very happy for that,” Leyva said.
