Schellas Hyndman: David Ferreira 50/50 for Sunday
By Todd Date
Tuesday marked FC Dallas’ first training session since they returned from last week’s trip to Orlando. David Ferreira was among several players not participating today as the 2010 MLS MVP continues to recover from an Achilles' injury suffered in last week’s win over Orlando City SC in the Walt Disney World Resort Pro Soccer Classic.
FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman was asked about Ferreira and his status for Sunday’s 2012 season opener with Red Bull New York and here’s what he had to say:
“It’s going to be 50/50 right now. I think he’s in a little more pain than we’d thought he’d be in but it’s really discouraging because he really played well against BK Hacken, went 90 minutes and just got kicked just way too many times against Orlando. We’re paying the price now,” Hyndman said.
The Dallas gaffer also elaborated on how exactly the man known as “El Torito” picked up that rather serious knock in the first place.
“We played in the Disney Tournament. In the first game, he was really very effective and didn’t really take too many nasty fouls. In the second game, it was a lot of after the ball play, when a player passes the ball and somebody comes and kicks your ankle,” Hyndman said. “His Achilles was kicked quite a few times and unfortunately for him, that’s where he has his pain. The good news is it wasn’t his ankle. It’s a different type of an injury.”
With Ferreira on the sidelines, Ricardo Villar is filling in as FCD’s central attacking midfielder as the club looks poised to be in a 4-1-4-1 formation with Panamanian newcomer Blas Perez being the lone striker, but Hyndman has yet to rule him out for Sunday.
“We’ll have to wait and see. We all know David he’s an extremely tough player,” the FCD coach said. “He has a high pain tolerance and it’s very important for himself to be prepared for the first game.”
