Schellas Hyndman: Bruno Guarda too tentative in loss to Whitecaps

By Todd Date

When FC Dallas came from behind to beat expansion side Montreal, 2-1 on April 14, one reason they did so was FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman switching from the 4-4-2 formation he employed in the first half into a 4-1-4-1 for the final 45 minutes of play.

Bruno Guarda was one of two changes made to start the second half and as FCD’s central attacking midfielder, the ex-SMU star definitely had a solid game. So when he started in Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Vancouver, it surprised few. However, the performances between the Montreal and Vancouver game couldn’t have been more different in the eyes of his head coach.

“Bruno was put into a position I thought he did well when he was here and we played Montreal of getting forward, getting aggressive and going to goal. I didn’t think he had the same intensity and the same focus of getting forward and being a difference maker [against Vancouver], but again you’re going in from going off the bench where you don’t know if you’re starting to I know I’m starting,” Hyndman said. “Probably the tension, the anxiety buildup on him, I thought he played very tentative and wasn’t aggressive enough for that position going forward.”
