FC Dallas finally got around to signing MLS veteran forward Scott Sealy and 2012 Supplemental Draft pick Alex Lee.

Sealy is a veteran of six MLS seasons that has scored 31 goals and nine assists in 128 appearances. After being traded to San Jose from Sporting Kansas City midway through the 2008 season, Sealy racked up three goals and four assists in 40 appearances for the Earthquakes. The 5’10” forward spent the 2009 season playing with Maccabi Tel Aviv FC of the Israeli Premier League. He scored one goal in 14 appearances with the club that season.

“Scott is an experienced and successful forward,” said FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman. “He knows the league well and works very hard. He came in here and had a great preseason, scoring a bunch of goals. We are really glad to be able to add him to our strike force heading into this season.”

After leaving Wake Forest University, Sealy became the 11th overall pick in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft for Sporting Kansas City. He spent three seasons in Kansas City, where he made 88 appearances and scored 28 goals. Sealy is also a member of the Trinidad and Tobago National Team, for which he has scored two goals in 25 appearances.

Also an 11th overall selection, FC Dallas took Lee with its first pick in the 2012 MLS Supplement Draft. Lee captained Maryland to a 14-4-3 season in 2011. The 5’10” native of Rockville, Md. helped lead the Terps to a 1.05 goals against average last season. Lee picked up a game-winning assist in a 2-1 overtime victory against Rutgers on Oct. 4 and started all but three contests for Maryland in 2011. He finished his college career with four assists in 65 appearances.

“We were really surprised Alex was still available with the 11th pick,” said Hyndman. “He has really lived up to our expectations after seeing him during his senior season at Maryland. He reminds me a lot of Zach Loyd. He is versatile. He can play as either a center back of or right back. Alex is very strong defensively and his abilities getting forward and joining the attack improve every day.”

George John's return is a boost for FC Dallas

It’s been a week of somewhat mixed news for FC Dallas fans. First came the disconcerting news from Florida that 2010 MLS MVP David Ferreira had suffered an Achilles injury earlier in the week. While it doesn’t appear serious, the fact that “El Torito” now has another ailment to fight through in a preseason where he’s already been battling his way back from missing all but six games in 2011 is more than a small worry.

Then on Friday, FCD supporters learned that George John would indeed be re-joining the club after spending the last six weeks on loan with English Championship (a.k.a. second-division) side West Ham United.

Anyone who tracked the affable center back’s time in Jolly Ole England knows that he didn’t get a ton of run with the Hammers and while his stay across the pond didn’t work out well for him from that standpoint, it definitely worked out well for FCD since they now get their starting right center back for 2012.

It’s no big secret that anyone who has watched this team over the last few seasons knows that the pairing of John and Ugo Ihemelu, who was named Dallas’ captain earlier this week, is not only a rock-solid tandem in the middle of the park, but is also a Dynamic Duo that has to be considered one of the best center back combinations in all of Major League Soccer.

Colombian newcomer Hernan Pertuz has filled in well alongside Ihemelu during John’s stay in England and the two looked like they were starting to develop a solid partnership on the pitch during preseason. A major obstacle for that pairing is the clear language barrier between the South American Pertuz, who speaks little English and American Ihemelu.

That language barrier is much less a factor with the return of John. Some might wonder if he jumps right back in the fray and if he’ll be in Schellas Hyndman’s first 11 for next Sunday’s season opener with New York? Well, in this writer's opinion, of course he will.

It’s not like George has been sitting around inactive or on the lam (sorry, had to work Lamar Odom in there). John's been training and staying in shape. About the only adjustment he’ll have to make is maybe getting reacquainted with his teammates, but that too might be overstated.

While John’s stay in England most likely provided considerable benefits, even though he didn’t play a ton with the Hammers, it’s nice to have him back. And it’s also nice to have him back with FCD and in a situation the club wasn’t in for much of 2011, with a solid and fairly deep group of center backs.

Besides Pertuz, rookie Matt Hedges should also be ready to step in at a moment’s notice. If the club decides to keep 2012 supplemental pick Alex Lee, which it looke like they will, FCD figures to have sufficient depth in the middle.

Still, no matter who sticks besides Pertuz and Hedges, this will be a deep group, so deep that the mere possibility of having Zach Loyd slide over from right back to the middle won’t even be a remote possibility. At least FCD fans hope not.

So it’s good to have George John back in the fold. He’s been a big part of what has been a solid Dallas backline over the past few years and his return makes center back almost at the bottom of the list when it comes to concerns surrounding this year’s club.

There is, however, still one question yet to be answered about John's return. With his contract up at the end of the year, will he re-sign with FCD or test the international waters yet again later this year? Stay tuned to see how that one turns out but at least for now it’s great to know such a defensive cornerstone will be back in Frisco for the foreseeable future, isn’t it?

Gabbing with the gaffer - talking trialists and such

I caught up with FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman a couple days ago from Florida and discussed a wide array of subjects. Here are his thoughts on several trialists.

Ivory Coast Forward Dogba

Hyndman: We did not keep him. We sent him back.

Mexican Forward Juan Carlos Enriquez

Hyndman: He comes out of Santos Laguna where he played last year. I think he’s 20 or 21. He’s got some very good technical ability. He reads the game very well. I think again, the speed of play, the intensity, those types of things he has to adjust to and being on trial, there’s not a lot of time to adjust to these things.

Houston native and defender Christian Ibeagha

Hyndman: Christian is a solid player. He’s athletic. He reads the game pretty well, strong. We’re just a little concerned and continue to work on his distribution. As a center back, you can’t be under hitting a pass in the midfield or missing a target player. Those are some of the things the more we’re working with him, the more we gear towards possession exercises and put him into game-like situations the better he’ll be at that.

Supplemental pick Alex Lee

Hyndman: We like him. He played for a very good university, so he’s got strong fundamentals, two-way player. He reminds me a lot of Zach Loyd. There’s some similarities there. We just need to see more and more of him.

French Midfielder Geoffrey Tulasne

Hyndman: I’m not real sure how you pronounce it. I just call him Geoffrey, by his first name. But nice resume, played at a high level in France. Probably a little bit of a detour in his career, which kind of makes him available for us so we’re looking at him. Left midfielder, right midfielder, second striker, much more of a strike force. We looked at him yesterday and we’ll look at him again for 45 minutes tomorrow [Thursday].

FC Dallas defeated the University of Tulsa men’s soccer team 5-1 today on the adidas Field at FC Dallas Stadium. Dallas got two goals each out of forwards Blas Perez and Scott Sealy in the victory.

The game got off to a slow start for FC Dallas. The team surrendered a 1-0 lead in just the fifth minute when Tulsa’s Bryce Follensbee got a jump on the FC Dallas defense. The speedy forward arrived first to a through ball played into the top right corner of the area and was taken to the ground by FC Dallas center back Ugo Ihemelu. Without hesitation, the referee awarded a penalty kick, which was converted by teammate Omar Mata.

FC Dallas settled down and found an equalizer in the 25th minute when Perez benefited from good combination play between Zach Loyd and Andrew Jacobson. After controlling the ball on the right flank, Loyd played Jacobson a through ball near the top of the area. Jacobson turned with the ball and knocked a lateral centering pass in on the floor to Perez, who controlled the ball well under pressure and finished low to the right side of Tulsa goalkeeper Mark Pace.

Brek Shea started the sequence that gave Dallas a 2-1 lead just before halftime. The midfielder controlled the ball at the top of the box with his back to goal before being knocked to the ground by a Tulsa defender. The foul earned Dallas a penalty kick, which was converted by Perez with a sharp pass into the lower right corner of the goal.

Dallas brought on 10 new players to begin the second half and got a goal from Sealy just 12 minutes later. The play began when right back Scott Gordon intercepted a pass near midfield and pushed the ball up the middle of the field to Bryan Leyva. Leyva turned and slotted a pass through Tulsa’s defense to Sealy, who spun and fired a low shot past the right arm of goalkeeper Mike Murray to make it 3-1.

University of Maryland product Alex Lee had a strong half. He set up both of FC Dallas’ final goals to help the team to a 5-1 victory. The first came in the 64th minute when Lee got the ball on the right flank and slid a pass inside to Dogba. The Ivory Coast forward finished cleanly, hitting a sliding shot to the back post with his first touch.

Lee beat a trio of Tulsa defenders on the dribble to setup the final goal. His pass inside to Sealy put the forward in position to give Dallas a 5-1 lead, but a Tulsa defender drug the Trinidadian native to the ground, forcing the referee to once again point to the spot. Sealy converted the penalty with a hard blast down the middle of the goal.

FC Dallas will play its final preseason tune-up in Frisco on Wednesday morning before departing to Orlando, Fla. to take part in the Walt Disney Pro Soccer Classic. FC Dallas will face the U.S. U-23 National Team in that match, which will be played on the adidas Field at FC Dallas Stadium at 10 a.m.

As they should do, FC Dallas ran roughshod over Memphis by a 6-0 scoreline today on the adidas Field at FC Dallas Stadium. Three of Dallas’ goals were scored by midfielder Andrew Wiedeman, who netted the hat trick in just 45 minutes of action.

FC Dallas took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute on a broken play that began with a clearance from goalkeeper Chris Seitz. A Memphis defender misjudged the ball near midfield, allowing Castillo to win the ball and dribble in alone on Memphis goalkeeper Conor Hurley. Castillo feinted right before going to his left and finishing into an empty net.

In the 32nd minute, right back Scott Gordon played a perfect ball over the top to Castillo, who was in alone for a second time. Castillo beat Hurley, but his lob shot over the goalkeeper didn’t have enough momentum to find the back of the net before a Memphis defender caught up to the ball on the goal line and knocked it over the crossbar.

Gordon finally earned an assist on his third perfectly-weighted pass of the half in the 37th minute. After receiving the ball on the right flank, Gordon lobbed a pass into the area for Panamanian striker Blas Perez. Perez barely beat Hurley to the ball at the top of the area, chipping a one-touch shot into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.

FC Dallas extended its lead to three goals in the 53rd minute when Bobby Warshaw sent a ball outside to right back Alex Lee. Lee went inside on his defender and delivered a ball into the feet of Andrew Wiedeman at the top of the area. Wiedeman sent Scott Sealy in on goal with his first touch, allowing the forward to go around second-half goalkeeper Cody Uzcatequi and finish into an empty net.

Just four minutes later, Homegrown player Jonathan Top gained control of the ball on the left side, dribbled to the top of the area and delivered a cross on the floor to Wiedeman at the far post. Wiedeman finished his first of the day low to the near post to hand Dallas a 4-0 lead.

FC Dallas extended its lead to 5-0 in the 61st minute when left back Jair Benitez sent a cross into the box for Wiedeman, who volleyed a right-footed shot into the back of the net.

Wiedeman netted his third goal of the day in the 80th minute, thanks to a nice through ball played down the center of the field by Bruno Guarda. Wiedeman made a nice turn with the outside of his left foot to go by his marker before slipping a shot under the arms of Uzcatequi.

One small roster note, as made clear by his assist, Alex Lee is now in camp. Lee is a defender from Maryland FCD took in the first round of the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft.

Scattershooting with Schellas Hyndman

January, 20, 2012
Jan 20
10:00
AM CT
I caught up with FC Dallas head coach after Thursday’s evening session at the FC Dallas Stadium complex and here’s what he had to say about a wide array of subjects.

Will there be a scrimmage on Saturday?

Hyndman: No, our numbers (won’t allow it). We’ve got five in the training room right now and those are five being [Daniel] Cruz, Daniel Hernandez, Ugo [Ihemelu], AJ [Andrew Jacobson] and David [Ferreira]. So that’s five and then we’ve got 8-v-8 on the field. So we’ve got 21 players and we don’t have enough for even a scrimmage. The 8-v-8 is not enough. We brought in Ian Kalis, a boy we drafted who came in today for the first day and then we have another boy that we drafted, Walter Hines out of St. John’s, he’s going through his physical and hopefully we’ll have him out here sometimes tomorrow.

So with Kalis and Hines already here, what is the status of your top pick in the Supplemental Draft, Alex Lee, the defender from Maryland?

Hyndman: Alex hurt himself, so he didn’t go to the combine. He hurt himself during the season, more of a quadriceps. He’s just making sure he can recover, so we’re hoping he’ll be here on Wednesday.

Right now you’ve got the likes of Cruz, Ferreira, Hernandez, Ihemelu and Jacobson on the sidelines. Who do you expect to return first and why?

Hyndman: I think probably the one that’s going to be the first one to go will be AJ. He had his surgery maybe two to three weeks before Daniel. I’m asking him how he’s doing and he’s saying man coach, I feel good. I wish I felt like this at the end of last year but he went four months with a meniscus tear. What it did, that I didn’t realize because I’m always saying play with the pain and all that, was that the muscle was shutting down. That was the thing that surprised me and that was my own fault. Same thing with Daniel, by the time we needed them the most, they were done. That’s where Daniel Cruz was expected to come through and that didn’t go the way we had hoped it would.

Which of the homegrown players are you expecting to break out in 2012?

Hyndman: Ruben Luna looks stronger, fitter and then Bryan Leyva looks more focused, stronger. Victor [Ulloa] looked much better. Victor won our two-mile run in something like 11:20. I think after one year with us, these guys are starting to add something more to their bodies. They’re maturing.

We hope that Ruben will [break out this year] because he plays at a position where we really need but it wouldn’t surprise me if it turns out to be Victor. He’s just a solid player. The thing that hurts Victor is he’s coming along extremely well but what kind of hurts Victor sometimes is he just makes bonehead decisions and you don’t want your center midfielder to be giving the ball away or trying to dribble out of trouble. But he’s hard, he’s aggressive, his body’s turning into a man. I think the green light might be good for him.

And how has 2012 top pick Matt Hedges looked so far?

Hyndman: Like I said to him today, every day you’re impressing us more. He’s a solid defender. He’s got the size. He reminds all of us a little bit of George John. George came in from the combine coming off a meniscus surgery so he wasn’t at his best. But it took George about a third of the season before we got him on the field. Hedges is a player that may be a step ahead but we don’t know if he’ll have that reach in his first year.
FC Dallas selected Alex Lee, Walter Hines and Ian Kalis in the 2012 Supplemental Draft, held earlier today via conference call.

“Lee played as both a right back and a center back for a good program at Maryland,” said FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman. “He is very similar to Zach Loyd. He has a tremendous work rate and is tactically sound. He also has good speed and character.”

The 11th overall pick in the first round, Lee captained Maryland to a 14-4-3 season in 2011. The 5-10 native of Rockville, Md. led the Terps backline to a 1.05 goals against average. Lee picked up a game-winning assist in a 2-1 overtime victory against Rutgers on Oct. 4 and started all but three contests for Maryland in 2011.

Dallas’ third round pick (49th overall) out of St. John's University, Hines netted six goals and added an assist during his senior season. Hines started all 23 matches the Red Storm played in 2011. He is also a former member of the Costa Rican Under-20 National Team.

“Hines is an extremely quick flank player,” said Hyndman. “His speed allows him to excel in one-on-one situations and he is very good at getting in behind opposing defenses. He also has a strong work rate.”

FC Dallas final selection in the 2012 Supplemental Draft was Kalis, a defender out of Southern Methodist University.

“Kalis grew up playing in Dallas,” said Hyndman. “I always liked him as a center midfielder, but he played right back for SMU last season. He has a lot of passion for the game and I am sure he will bring a lot of good qualities to the team.”

A native of nearby Plano, Texas, Kalis’ soccer career flourished at Jesuit College Prep in Dallas where he garnered national attention leading Jesuit to a 26-2 record with 15 goals and 20 assists. He began his college career at Duke University, starting 16 games for the Blue Devils in 2008. Over the course of three seasons at SMU, Kalis played in 53 games contributing six assists and a goal.
