Soccer: Toronto FC

A FC Dallas side made up of reserve and home grown players fell to Toronto FC by a 3-0 scoreline in the 3rd game of the Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic on Thursday night.

The defeat pushed FCD down to second in the group with four points, three points above both BK Hacken and Orlando City, who face off in the second match of the night. Though Dallas maintain a three- and five-goal advantage, respectively, over their group foes, they must still await the result to find out if they'll play the Houston Dynamo in the consolation match at 5 pm CT, also on March 3.

Goals for Florida trip simple for FCD

On Friday, FC Dallas will head to Orlando, Florida for the final phase of preseason. FCD will play at least four games before returning to Frisco in just over a week. The term measuring stick games is usually reserved for regular season contests, that moniker can definitely be applied to several of the matches they will have during their stay in the Sunshine State.

“It’s our last opportunity to prepare for the season. So the goals for the Florida trip are to try to get the team on the same page, try to figure out where our strengths and areas that we’ve got to be concerned about, try to get guys playing together and playing against good competition,” Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman said earlier this week. “We should feel pretty good about ourselves when we get back.”

After facing a number of college foes both before and after their trip to Cancun, Mexico, FCD stepped up the caliber of preseason competition by facing the United States Under-23 team on Wednesday and fell to the U-23s by a 2-1 score line.

Such a step up in terms of quality of competition is something the FCD players definitely welcome going forward. “I definitely think as a group, we’re ready,” starting right back Zach Loyd said. “We’ve been putting in a lot of work with two-a-days, going to Cancun, putting in some work and playing some teams from other countries. So I think the competition is something we definitely invite. We want to play the best competition we can in preseason.”

FCD captain Daniel Hernandez definitely agrees with Loyd that these games in Orlando are going to be crucial to ensuring that the entire club is ready for their 2012 season opener on Sunday, March 11 against New York. “That’s what preseason’s for-to push yourself and get prepared for the opening game. I think the tougher games that we can play the better for us,” Hernandez said. “Those college games are a good test for us but I think they’re more for us to just try to get our legs back and get some rhythm of play. These tough competition games are what is going to get us prepared.”

Earlier this week, Hyndman said he was about three players away from having the roster the way he wanted it, which means this trip could be crucial for several trialists like Scott Sealy, whom the FCD coach confirmed will be making the trip south.

The Dallas gaffer also didn’t rule out bringing in a few more players who would join them in Florida to have a look at them as possible roster additions.

But of course, the ultimate aim is a simple one for this trip-get his club as ready as possible for the season opener with the Red Bulls.

“I think now we’re at the point where we’ve got to start emphasizing the first team or the top reserve players, the players that we can count on to understand what we’re doing, the structure and then measure our fitness level against the opposition because they’ll be good games, MLS teams and then also to measure our standards against the opposition as well,” Hyndman said. “We’re maybe three, four weeks away before we open the season and like all teams, we’re not ready.”

Greatest FC Dallas goals: Brek Shea missle

December, 30, 2011

If you are new to the 3rd Degree blog here at ESPN, you may not know we were around a long time as in independent site before coming to ESPN/Dallas. In fact, we just celebrated our 14th birthday this last October.

So to help celebrate our upcoming 15th season of FC Dallas coverage I thought it would be fun to look back at some of the great goals in FC Dallas history. From now through the end of the season I'll pick out a great goal, find the video if I can, and tell you a little about it.

To kick it off, here's one from Brek Shea this season that is truly spectacular. FC Dallas won the game at Toronto FC 1-0 on July 20, 2011, to continue what became a 7 game unbeaten streak.

Shea wins the ball in midfield and immediately receives it back from Daniel Hernandez. Shea then goes on a run straight through the heart or the TFC midfield before launching a canon of a line drive to the corner of the goal.

Here is the goal in all it's glory.

FC Dallas will return to ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort for the 2012 edition of the tournament in late February as defending champions having won the 2011 Disney Pro Soccer Classic.

FC Dallas will be joined by in-state rivals Houston Dynamo as well as Toronto FC, Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Montreal Impact, Sporting Kansas City, Sweden’s B.K. Hacken and Orlando City SC. FCD will face B.K. Hacken, Orlando City, and Toronto FC in pool play.

“This is unquestionably the best Disney Pro Soccer Classic field we’ve had so far,’’ said Disney Sports manager Patrick Dicks. “This will be a rare opportunity for fans to see so many marquee pro soccer teams in one place and experience the game in an intimate, family-friendly atmosphere.’’

The Classic begins with a week of pool play Feb. 24-March 1, followed by the championship game March 3. The tournament will offer fans unique interaction with players, such as the Orlando City SC “Fan Fest” on Feb. 25 when fans can meet Orlando City players and pose for photos with the team’s trophies.

Placed in Pool 2 with Toronto FC, Orlando City and B.K. Hacken, FC Dallas will kick off the tournament with an 8 p.m. matchup against B.K. Hacken on Feb. 25. Three days later, FC Dallas will meet Orlando City for the third time in two seasons in a match also scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. FC Dallas’ final match of pool play will be on March 1 against Toronto FC. That game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

FC Dallas suffered a horrific meltdown against Toronto FC on Tuesday night and it cost them a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League knockout round. FCD's miserable second half of the season continued as their amazingly bright start in CCL play, when they became the first U.S. team to go unbeaten in its first five Champions League matches, now comes to nothing. FCD was also the first MLS side to defeat a Mexican opponent in Mexico when it defeated Pumas UNAM 1-0 on Aug. 17.

Toronto FC took a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute when a Dallas free kick was cleared out of the area to Plata and Julian De Guzman. Going around his defender at the end line, Plata centered a ball for Danny Koevermans who finished his second attempt after the rebound on his first came right back to him.

Toronto FC caught Dallas with another counter attack in minute 69. Ryan Johnson made a back-door pass to Plata slotted it home for a 2-0 lead. Plata netted his second goal of the match in the 81st minute, when he stole the ball from Jackson near midfield and broke in alone on goal.

It's Called Football - the Canadian point of view

I had a chance yesterday to join the It's Called Football podcast which appears on canadiansoccernews.com/. Host Ben Rycroft and I talk about the CCL match and discuss the Brek Shea transfer saga rumors. You can listen in below and hear my bit as well get the break down on TFC from the hosts.

FC Dallas defender Jack Stewart

On his goal…
“Ugo played a good ball in on the cross. I stayed to the front post and was able to beat the goalie to the post. It was after a set play, so we just kept our runs going and got a good chance after the rebound.”

On restarting the game 0-0 after leading 1-0 at halftime yesterday…
It’s not the way you want to go into a game but it all worked out for us in the end. It was good to get a result. The coaching staff did a good job of getting us prepared for today. It’s more of a mental thing because you play 45 minutes last night and you are up 1-0 and now you’ve got to start the whole game over. It’s not an ideal situation but we’re professionals and we responded well.”

FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman

General thoughts on the match…
“The game today was really a good result for FC Dallas. We’ve played four games in CONCACAF Champions League and we’ve won all four with four shutouts. The whole game was quite a unique experience with the stoppage of the game yesterday when we were winning 1-0, sitting around in the locker room for another two hours last night and then getting up early this morning for kickoff. It took a lot out of both teams, but again, our boys came through.

We had an issue with Andrew Jacobson this morning at kickoff so Jack Stewart was thrown in there at the last minute. He was not prepared, but he went in and it was really nice to see him get the game-winning goal. Our players played hard and gave everything they had for us to come away with a 1-0 victory.”

FC Dallas knocks off Toronto in CCL, tops Group C

FC Dallas traveled to Toronto for a mid-week CONCACAF Champions League match and over a game and a half defeated TFC by a 2-0 score line... sorta of. After Wednesday's match was rained out at halftime with a 1-0 FCD lead, the replay went off Thursday morning with FCD again winning 1-0. (CONCACAF matches is called before full time are replayed in full).

With the shutout win FCD tied the Montreal Impact's record of posting shutouts in its first 4 #CCL games.

New defender Jack Stewart, added last week for defensive depth, started in the back line and scored the loan goal off a cross from FCD's other center back, Ugo Ihemelu.

There are some concerns of a possible injury to Jackson, who left the game after 30 minute for Fabian Castillo. It's unclear at this time if Jackson is injured, but a sub at the 30 minute mark is very unusual.

FCD now sits atop Group C with 6 points in two games. FC Dallas will next host Tauro from Panama at Pizza Hut Park in CCL play on September 14th at 7 PM CT.

CONCACAF Champions League schedule: round 1 and 2

PM CT
With it's 2-0 aggregate win over Alianza FC, FC Dallas has advanced into the group stage of play in the CONCACAF Champions League. CONCACAF being what they are, only the first two rounds of play have been announced.

FC Dallas opens with the toughest game they will play during this round, traveling to Mexico City on Wednesday, August 17th (9 PM CT), to take on three time winner of the CONCACAF Champions Cup (the forerunner to the CCL) Club Universidad Nacional A.C. (a.k.a. UNAM Pumas). Pumas has won seven Primera División titles and are the current Clausura 2011 champions.

In other words Pumas is good, really good. And playing in Mexico City is both difficult and intimidating. This will be, in short, the toughest game FC Dallas has ever played.

Quick history on Pumas for the many Americans who may now know, the club was founded in the 50s by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), a large "independent" university in Mexico city. One of the largest universities in the Americas to this day (over 300,000 students). The team was originally formed of students and represented the university by playing in the professional soccer leagues. The Pumas teams colors were allegedly picked because of Notre Dame, American football being very popular at the time on campus. While there is no "official" connection between club and school any more, the school teams are all still called Pumas and Pumas' home stadium in on UNAM's campus.

Round 2 of the CCL will see FCD making another trip, although this one will be against a much easier opponent, albeit an opponent with good crowds and fans. Round 2 FCD will face off with familiar foe Toronto FC on Wednesday, Augsut 24th (7 PM CT) at BMO Field. TFC isn't a team I have to tell you much about and will make a substantially easier opponent given their current trouble and roster churn.

Since the CCL is supposed to be for champions (mostly) you may wonder what Toronto FC is doing in this tournament. TFC qualified by winning the Nutrilite Canadian Championship over Vancouver Whitecaps.

This is fact the Red's third straight CCL appearance. TFC lost in the prelimary round to old friend Colin Clarke and his Puerto Rico Islanders two years ago, then last year finished 3rd in Group A behind Real Salt Lake and La Maquina after they upset Cruz Azul in their opening match.

As for the rest of the schedule it has yet to be determined, or at least yet to be released. With two games coming before the month is out, we should hear more of the schedule before we get to September.

How about some Macion Santos goals?

For your viewing pleasure, three Maicon Santos goals...

and one colossal miss...

FC Dallas has acquired Brazilian forward Maicon Santos from Toronto FC pending receipt of his P-1 Visa, in exchange for midfielder Eric Avila. FC Dallas will also receive an international slot from Toronto FC through the remainder of 2011.

“We are very excited that Maicon Santos is joining FC Dallas,” FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman said. “He is an established player in MLS. He’s got great size. He is the leading scorer for Toronto FC with six goals. Given the way we play and the type of ball movement we get, I believe he will contribute immediately to the team.”

Santos has started 15 games for Toronto this season, scoring a team-high six goals and one assist. His 52 shots this season are also a team-high for Toronto FC.

The 27-year-old Santos joined Toronto FC on July 9, 2010, from Chivas USA. Now in his third MLS season, Santos has scored 12 goals and four assists in 51 games. The Paracambi, Brazil native played professionally in Brazil, Tunisia, Libya and Israel before joining MLS. He made his professional debut with Rio de Janeiro-based Madureira Esporte Clube in 2004, playing with the Série C club for two years.

Leaving FC Dallas is Avila, who has scored three goals and seven assists in 63 games. Acquired in the second round of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft with the 19th overall pick, Avila has one goal and two assists in 13 games this season.

“For us, it was very difficult to see Eric Avila leave,” Hyndman said. “We are going to miss him. He is a great team player. He has scored some very important goals for FC Dallas. He has been a part of this team for almost four years. He has some very good friends and coaches here in Dallas. The problem was he was not getting enough time here and I think Toronto FC really wanted Avila to be a part of their team, which encouraged us to make a trade.”

The 23-year-old is best known for scoring FC Dallas’ most-important goal of the 2010 season in the 88th minute of a 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake in the first leg of the Western Conference Semifinal. A native of San Diego, Calif., Avila enjoyed a breakout season in 2010, tying a career-high for appearances in a season with 18 and tripling his career-high for shots taken in a season with 15.

Brek Shea wonder goal earns FCD win in Toronto

FC Dallas earned all three points on the road in Toronto on the back of a Brek Shea wonder goal and Kevin Hartman's 11th shutout of the season. Shea scored his 9th goal (and 5th game winner) of the season before a crowd of 21, 000 at BMO Field in Toronto to give FCD the 1-0 victory. Shea remain 2nd in MLS tied with Landon Donovan, 1 goal behind Thierry Henry's 10.

Shea started the play by stealing the ball off a TFC player in the FCD end of the field. After poking the ball to Daniel Hernandez and getting it right back Shea dribbled a good third of the field before hitting a cracker of a shot. "I just followed the guy who was dribbling," said Shea after the game. "I was able to poke it from him to Danny [Hernandez], kind of play the one-two with Danny, beat one player, kept going and just took a shot. I happened to make a good connection; it went off the post and went in."

Hartman made six saves in the game to grab his 11th shutout behind yet another solid FCD defensive performance. Hartman's goal against is down to 0.90

FC Dallas continues its road trip with New York up next, as the team travels to the Big Apple to take on Red Bull New York at 5 p.m. CT on Saturday.
